Nintendo Switch 2 First Official Glimpse:
Why let leaks spoil your product launch when you can reveal it yourself? That’s likely why Nintendo decided to release a first-look trailer for its highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo has announced that its long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 hybrid gaming console will launch this year. The console, which features a larger screen and revamped controllers, is the company’s hope for a comeback in the hardware business.
In a teaser trailer, Nintendo showcased a glimpse of the Switch 2. The video starts with the last version of the console, showing the detachable Joy-Con controllers before revealing the upgraded design. The new Joy-Cons are bigger, matte black, and come in light blue and red variations. They now attach magnetically and can connect to the console’s main tablet or be used separately when the device is docked or propped up on its stand.
Another improvement is the redesigned kickstand, which features a U-shaped design that allows the console to tilt nearly flat for enhanced stability. The overall design of the Nintendo Switch 2 closely resembles earlier leaks available online.
Nintendo has not revealed a release date but promised more details during its next “Nintendo Direct” event on April 2. The company also confirmed that the Switch 2 will be backward compatible, allowing players to enjoy games from the original Switch.
The Switch 2 comes at a crucial time for Nintendo. The current Switch, which launched in March 2017, is nearing the end of its eight-year run. Most consoles are replaced within six to seven years, making this upgrade overdue.
Nintendo has been facing financial challenges, with its net profit falling 69% year-over-year to ¥27.7 billion ($178.2 million) in its most recent quarter. Revenue also dropped 17% to ¥276.7 billion. The company is counting on the Switch 2 to reignite interest and drive console sales forward.
