Nirmala Sitharaman became the second woman to hold the post of Defence Minister after Indira Gandhi and first to hold this office full-time.

 Nirmala Sitharaman was born on 18 August 1959 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu to a middle-class family. Her father's name is Shri Narayan Sitharaman and her Mother’s Name is Smt. Savitri Sitharaman.

She did her schooling in Madras and Tiruchirappalli and completed her BA in Economics from Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College in Tiruchirappalli. Further, she pursued a master's from JNU in 1984.

After moving to London, she worked as the Senior Manager of Research and Analysis with Price Waterhouse.

She and her family returned to India in 1991. In 2004, she joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), though her husband's family was completely pro-Congress.

She likes classical music and listens to them from time to time. She is a devotee of Lord Krishna.
