China Reports Surge In HMPV Among Children:
The Union Health Ministry is monitoring reports of a Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China. While China has seen a rise in respiratory illnesses, especially in children under 14, no such increase has been observed in India.
What is Human Metapneumovirus?
- A respiratory virus causing flu-like symptoms: cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath.
- It can lead to complications like bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in young children, older adults, and people with weak immunity.
Spread and Symptoms:
- Spreads through coughs, sneezes, close contact, or touching contaminated surfaces.
- Incubation period: 3-6 days.
- Common during winter and spring.
India’s Response:
- No cases of HMPV reported in India so far.
- Hospitals are prepared to handle respiratory illnesses.
- No special medicines are needed, as there are no specific antiviral drugs for HMPV.
Global Context:
Human Metapneumovirus was discovered in 2001 and belongs to the same family as RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus).
- Cases have previously been reported in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
India’s health authorities remain vigilant, and there’s no cause for alarm currently.Â
