HMPV

China Reports Surge In HMPV Among Children:

The Union Health Ministry is monitoring reports of a Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China. While China has seen a rise in respiratory illnesses, especially in children under 14, no such increase has been observed in India.

What is Human Metapneumovirus?

    • A respiratory virus causing flu-like symptoms: cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath.
    • It can lead to complications like bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in young children, older adults, and people with weak immunity.

Spread and Symptoms:

    • Spreads through coughs, sneezes, close contact, or touching contaminated surfaces.
    • Incubation period: 3-6 days.
    • Common during winter and spring.

India’s Response:

    • No cases of HMPV reported in India so far.
    • Hospitals are prepared to handle respiratory illnesses.
    • No special medicines are needed, as there are no specific antiviral drugs for HMPV.

Global Context:

Human Metapneumovirus was discovered in 2001 and belongs to the same family as RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus).

    • Cases have previously been reported in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

India’s health authorities remain vigilant, and there’s no cause for alarm currently.
