World Water Day 2024: Today, despite development in almost every field, there is a water crisis in the world. World Water Day is celebrated on 22 March to make people aware of the importance of water in human life. Due to industrialization in the world, it is difficult to use clean and disease-free water. Due to the unavailability of clean water, waterborne diseases are taking the form of epidemics.
Due to the increasing problem of water, it is now being heard that there will be a third world war over water. People will forget the importance of water and use it. The United Nations has started celebrating World Water Day to make people aware of the importance of water.
On World Water Day 2024, let us take a moment to appreciate the vital role that water plays in sustaining life on our planet. As we strive to balance our needs with the health of our environment, it’s important to remember that water is not just a resource to be used and consumed, but the very essence of our existence.
World Water Day 2024 Theme, Significance – Water for Peace
Start of water day
World Water Day was started at the conference of ‘United Nations Conference on Environment and Development’ (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro in the year 1992. In 2010, the UN recognized access to safe and clean drinking water as a human right. World Water Day was celebrated for the first time in 1993 on 22 March, whose main objective was to raise awareness about water in the world. Water should be saved by spreading awareness about its conservation and maintenance.
22nd is the day of resolution to save water. The topic is to know about the importance and conservation of water. About 1.5 billion people in the world are not getting pure water to drink. Nature provides us with water, we use it only in limited quantity. We should do this because water cannot be created by humans.
We have to save natural resources from depletion. Every person has to take a pledge to save water. Everyone knows how important water is in our lives. There is 70% water in the world, out of which only 3% is potable water. The remaining 97% is not potable water. Life is impossible without water.
Water for peace:
Water is very important for life, hence peace or conflict over water can increase. When water becomes scarce or polluted, water is not available to all people equally. This can increase tension between people, communities, or countries. And it can create an atmosphere of war. 3 billion people in the world do not have water sources in their country and are dependent on other countries, hence there are water agreements between many countries.
As populations are increasing, climate change is also increasing and the problem of natural resources is increasing. We need to work unitedly to save these natural resources.
Water is life:
Living without water is an incomplete imagination, hence water is life. Along with the increasing population, misuse of water is also increasing. If this misuse is not stopped or water is not saved, then it is difficult for any living being to survive on earth. We all forget things, we waste a lot of water while washing our face in the water tank.
We waste precious water in bathing our car or bathing ourselves. Humans have over-exploited the limited amount of water available. Today, the result of this is that the world problem of drinking water has arisen in many countries.
We humans have made the water of drains, ponds, and rivers unfit for drinking by using chemicals. Today, if water is not available from the tap at home, we get water from water tankers. But there is not such a system everywhere. The situation is not the same everywhere. We have to make every citizen of the world aware and make every possible effort to save water.
Importance of rainwater
Due to the increasing population of the world and industrial development, pollution has increased due to which there is a shortage of clean water and the water demand has increased. In the future, the availability of agricultural water and drinking water is in danger. Despite all these issues, water Pollution is not becoming an issue today, we should think about saving every drop of water and make people aware.
Every person should take a pledge to save rainwater, where earlier many rivers used to flow in the world, but During this period, many rivers have become extinct; ponds and ponds have disappeared from village localities; very little work has been done for their maintenance and conservation. If we do not save water today then the future will be seen only in our eyes. Keeping this water problem in mind, we have to save rainwater and make people aware of it.
Main reasons for water wastage
- 30 to 35 liters of water is wasted in washing a car. A lot of water is wasted in car washing all over the world.
- In India, 17 to 44 percent of water is wasted every day due to valves installed in pipelines to transport water from one place to another.
- Israel exports grains even though there is very little rainfall on average, about 10 cm, but countries like India and China have to import grains despite there being more rainfall.
- 8 to 10 liters of water is used for bathing whereas hundreds of liters of water is wasted while bathing in the tub. When we brush, we leave the tap open due to which about 20 to 25 liters of water flows in 5 minutes.
- 3500 to 5700 liters of water is wasted in producing one kg of chicken, more than 15,000 liters of water is wasted in producing one kg of beef, 900 liters of water is wasted in growing one kg of wheat and 1900 liters of water is wasted in growing one kg of rice.
Important facts about Water
- Every person needs 40 to 50 liters of clean water per day.
- UN World Water Development Report 2023 has revealed that 2 billion people lack clean water and 3.6 billion people do not have access to clean water.
- Around 10 to 20 lakh people die every year due to waterborne diseases in the world. 250 million people are getting infected every year by water-borne diseases.
- There are 1 billion 40 cubic kilo liters of water on the entire earth, which is 70 percent of the earth, but only 3% of this water is potable, the rest of the water is salty, 75.2% of this 3% water is in the polar parts and 23.6% is in the polar regions. 0.76%% of water is located in the ground and the remaining part is in the form of moisture in rivers, atmosphere, lakes, and green trees and plants. Out of these, the share of water used is very little which is located in the form of underground water, lakes, and rivers.
- The maximum of this water is Part of water is used in agriculture and factories, and the rest of the water is used for food, bathing, washing clothes, and cleaning.
- Only one percent of the amount of fresh water available in the world is used by us.
- Every year about 3 billion liters of water is packed in bottles and drinking water is made available to the people.
- Humans require 3 liters of drinking water per day and animals require 50 liters per day.
What are the water crises in the world?
The availability of clean water is a global crisis. 1.1 billion people in the world do not have access to water and 2.7 billion people face water shortage for at least one month every year. 785 million people around the world are affected by water issues.
Why do we say that water is life?
Water is required to carry out biochemical reactions in our environment. Water is required for the existence of life on Earth. It is an essential component in all biological reactions.
